Fashion Tips for Moms: How to Dress Sharp and Stylish

As a mother, it can be difficult to find the time and energy to dress fashionably. (I just saw a meme on Facebook about how a mom was taking the tags off her new clothes while still wearing a decade-old T-shirt.) However, with some planning and creativity, you can still pull together stylish looks that are both comfortable and flattering. Here are our top tips for looking sharp while maintaining your busy lifestyle as a mom. So, let’s get started!

1. Start from your lingerie

When it comes to looking sharp and stylish, the foundation of your outfit is all important. Invest in quality lingerie that fits you well and enhances your figure. Choose bras with good support, as this will help ensure that any clothing you wear over them looks great. It’s a good idea to have a few different styles of bras, as different straps will go with different tops (especially in the summer when you may wear a tank top, lacier top, or halter top).

Also, make sure to buy underwear made from comfortable fabrics such as cotton or silk. Not only will this keep you feeling more comfortable throughout the day, but it can also prevent visible panty lines under fitted trousers or skirts. The lingerie sets you choose should also suit your body shape—for example, a longline bra can be flattering on both fuller and more petite figures.

It’s also a good idea to invest in some quality shapewear if you want to create an extra streamlined silhouette.

2. Invest in timeless staples

Another way to stay fashionable while maintaining a busy lifestyle is by investing in classic pieces that never go out of style. These timeless staples include items like a little black dress, a white blouse, blue jeans, and a trench coat. Having a capsule wardrobe with the essentials will allow you to create multiple stylish looks for any occasion without having to buy a new outfit each time.

When shopping for timeless pieces, always look for quality fabrics and good fit. The better-made something is, the longer it will last you. The same goes for fit—if you find something that fits well, get it in multiple colors!

3. Invest in versatile items

Having clothing that can be worn in different ways is a great way to save time when getting ready in the morning. There are lots of versatile items out there such as wrap tops, shrugs, necklaces, or scarves which can all be worn multiple ways.

You could even get creative and mix two garments together to make something unique. This could be anything from wearing trousers under skirts to wearing dresses as tops. It’s amazing what you can come up with when you get creative! It’s also worth investing in some accessories to give your outfit an extra boost. A great handbag, belt, or pair of shoes can instantly elevate any look.

4. Accessorize wisely

Accessorizing can be the perfect way to add a bit of flair and personality to your look. Whether it’s a statement necklace, bold earrings, or chunky bracelet, accessories are an easy way to make any outfit stand out. Be sure to choose items that go well with the overall look you’re going for and don’t over-accessorize as this can quickly become too much.

There are lots of affordable accessories out there so you don’t have to break the bank. It’s also worth investing in some key pieces that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. For examples, pearls can dress up any everyday outfit or complement a pretty dress for a special occasion.

5. Don’t forget about comfort

Being comfortable is key when trying to dress sharp and stylishly as a mom, so make sure you prioritize comfort when choosing your outfits. Invest in clothing made from breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, or bamboo which will help keep you cool throughout the day.

Also, try to find items that offer flexible and comfortable fits. Loose-fitting clothes or those with an elasticated waistband are great options as they give you the freedom to move throughout the day.

It’s worth investing in a few pairs of quality shoes that provide good arch and heel support. This will help keep your feet comfortable as you go about your day. The first pair of quality shoes I invested in for myself were sandals that I wore for the next decade (and was very sorry to let go when they finally wore out).

6. Don’t be afraid to mix and match

Mixing and matching different pieces can be a great way to create unique looks. Have fun playing around with different colors and patterns, experiment with layering items together, or add textures such as fur or leather for extra depth. Trying new combinations is a great way to update your wardrobe without having to buy lots of new clothes. Plus, it’s a fun way to express yourself!

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to fashion, so don’t be afraid to try something new. It could just be the perfect look for you!

7. Have a plan in place

Finally, having a plan in place can be really helpful when it comes to staying stylish as a mom. You could start by writing down some outfit ideas that you’d like to try or make an inspiration board with images of looks you’d like to recreate. This will help give you something to work towards and make it easier for you to put together outfits quickly.

It’s also worth setting aside time each month to go through your wardrobe and check what items need mending or replacing. If possible, set aside time every few months for shopping trips where you can pick up any new pieces you need. Having a plan in place will save you so much time and effort!

Is buying new clothes expensive?

No, buying new clothes doesn’t have to be expensive. There are lots of ways to get stylish and fashionable looks without breaking the bank. For example, it’s worth checking out thrift stores for pre-loved clothing items which can often be found at a fraction of the cost of brand new pieces. You could also look for cheaper alternatives to expensive items, such as faux fur or faux leather jackets instead of real leather ones. This way you can still get the same look but at a more affordable price.

Online shopping is also great for finding deals on clothing items, as many websites have regular sales and discounts which can help keep costs down. By subscribing to the newsletters of your favourite stores, you can often be notified of flash sales. For example, I recently got several staples for myself and my daughters at 40% off because I got a text message about a one-day sale.

Above all else, don’t forget to have fun and experiment with different styles! Happy dressing!
