My kids see their dentist twice a year and usually take their dentist’s recommendation to brush and floss more seriously than they take my recommendations to do so. The dentist is also able to help answer any questions and to explain dental hygiene to kids.

Plus, kids can see the x-rays and other photos of their teeth, so they know what those cavities look like! (For my 5-year-old at his recent dental check-up, that picture of his cavity was fascinating—he actually wanted to bring it home!)

You could also try using a flavored toothpaste or toothbrush that features your favorite cartoon character. We have a drawer full of toothpaste—I think there’s currently five flavors, from strawberry to mint—and the kids get to pick what they like. My older kids have their favorite flavor and brand, while my son tends to pick a different toothpaste every night. Whatever gets them brushing!

Additionally, involve your child in their dental care routine by allowing them to choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste. By making dental care fun and involving your child in the process, you can help them develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

When it comes to brushing, make sure the toothbrush is soft-bristled and the toothpaste has fluoride. Use a small amount of toothpaste and teach your child to brush in small, circular motions for at least two minutes.

Flossing should start as soon as your child has two teeth that touch. Show them how to gently slide the floss between the teeth and wrap it around each tooth in a “C” shape or use plastic flossers, which are easier for kids to hold. Currently, my 5-year-old has four molars that are touching each other, so I help him floss just those four spots in his mouth. His older sisters can use their flossers themselves. This dentist who offers dental implants in Chattanooga also adds that if flossing is too tedious for them, you can use interdental brushes instead.

Finally, mouthwash can provide a great finishing touch, but it’s important that your child knows not to swallow it. Rinse with a small amount for about 30 seconds and spit it out. By instilling these healthy habits early on, you can help ensure a lifetime of good oral health for your child.

My son’s dentist recommended having a crunchy snack such as celery or carrot sticks following a meal, as this can help knock bits of pasta or other foods off the teeth and prevent cavities. He also suggested using sugar-free gum, as this stimulates saliva production in the mouth, which helps to wash the teeth. If my kids are snacking on the go, I offer them gum when they are done.

Try limiting snacks and juice before bedtime (and ensure that your children brush and floss after snacking and before sleeping). Otherwise, food bits can stay on your child’s teeth overnight and create cavities.
