How To Clean Your Home Air Conditioning System

Air conditioning, as beneficial as it is, may be hazardous if it is not cleaned and maintained correctly and regularly. Furthermore, the environment may easily lead to the growth of dangerous organisms inside the air vents and thus cause a reduction in the air quality at your home. In order to avoid all of this, we’ve put together some helpful cleaning tips for your home AC system!

Why should the AC system be cleaned?

Many people think that if they have spent a lot on the purchase and installation of an air conditioner, they shouldn’t have to spend more money on additional cleanings every few months. However, it’s not so straightforward. The air conditioning system (including air duct and vents, and other types of home AC) must be cleaned not only to maintain the quality of the air you breathe at your home but also to sustain the air conditioning device itself.

As a result of contaminants, the AC system will have to work harder and at a decreased performance. This will not only require more power, but it will also shorten its longevity.

Filter cleaning

Moisture from the air condenses on the heat exchanger in your home air unit. The water then passes through the exchanger’s lamellae, into the drainage vessel, and eventually outdoors. The lamellae and drainage pipes offer excellent habitat for the growth of many dangerous organisms due to excessive humidity, and these can be further proliferated in the air at your home. Cleaning the air condition system includes disinfecting and sanitizing filters, washers, and other mechanical equipment, as well as drainage vessels and condensate drains.

All this makes it very important to keep the filters clean! Nevertheless, filter cleaning and/or replacement need not be such a scary thing. A variety of air filters that you can find at Filter Buy can come as a long-term solution to your AC worries. Therefore, with the help of a professional touch, you can continue breathing fresh, clean, and bacteria-free air with so little effort!

How to do it?

Cleaning the air filter is the basic thing. Many devices use the same filtering system, and while some differences exist between versions from various manufacturers, they are minor. The following is a list of filter cleaning procedures that you can do yourself:

  1. Make sure the air conditioner is turned off and unplugged. Following the instructions given with the device, open the air conditioner cover and remove the filter from its holder, which is usually a simple lift.
  2. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust here.
  3. Take the grate to the bathroom and wash it under the tap (particularly if the appliance hasn’t been cleaned in a long time and the filth is old). Detergents should not be used because they can harm the filter. Detergent residues that stay on the grilles contaminate the air entering the apartment during operation.
  4. Finally, dry the filter before reinstalling it in the indoor unit.
  5. Wipe the outside of the appliance, including any blinds and vents, with a moist towel. Replace the cover, plug it in, and start it again.

Some air conditioners come with disposable air purification filters that must be replaced as soon as they become dirty (much like your furnace filter or vacuum filter). Also, much like other equipment, air conditioning units contain a radiator or heat exchanger under the filter or immediately below the cover. If you get to it, you may clean it with the same vacuum cleaner.

Washing the interior of the device is not recommended, especially without the assistance of professionals. The AC unit’s instructions may mention steam cleaning, but this is something only trained professionals can do.

How often should it be cleaned?

The frequency with which you clean your AC unit’s air vents is determined by how often you use them and the sort of environment you live in. If you frequently use your AC system throughout the summer when the temperature rises, you should clean it at least twice, i.e., before use and towards the end of the use season.

Even if you haven’t used it once during the previous season, it’s a good idea to inspect and clean it completely. This is because dust and other contaminants might build up in the unit even during the months of inactivity. Likewise, it’s also a good idea to clean the gutters on a regular basis.

Although cleaning air ducts may sound simple, it is best done by professionals, so make sure you always at least ask for professional advice and assistance when cleaning yours!
