4 Health Check-Ups Every Mom Needs Regularly

Moms are amazing, and they do a million things every day to keep their families healthy and happy. But even the busiest moms need to set time aside for themselves to make sure they’re taking care of their own health. That’s why moms need to schedule yearly health check-ups. Here are four health check-ups every mom needs to get done on a regular basis.

1. Breast Check-Ups

Moms need to be sure to schedule regular breast check-ups. This is important for both detecting any early signs of breast cancer and for keeping tabs on your overall breast health. Be sure to ask your doctor how often you should have a breast check-up. Your age, health and family history may affect how often you should get screened.

Here are some of the most common breast issues:

  • breast cancer: This is the most common type of cancer in women, and early detection is critical. Be sure to schedule a mammogram every year.
  • fibroadenoma: These are benign tumors that can occur in the breasts. They are usually found during a routine breast exam and don’t require treatment unless they grow larger or cause pain.
  • cysts: Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the breasts. They are usually harmless but can sometimes be painful. Your doctor may recommend aspirating the cyst (removing the fluid) to relieve the pain.

If through a breast check-up your doctor finds something serious, it’s important to have surgery or treatment as soon as possible. In the case of fibroadenoma, you might not need surgery because of the non-surgical alternatives.

2. Pap Smears

All women need to have regular pap smears to screen for cervical cancer. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women have a pap smear every three years starting at age 21. If you’re over 30, you can get a pap smear every five years if you’ve had three negative Pap tests in a row.

Pap smears might also show other changes in the cells of the cervix that could turn into cancer if left untreated, so it’s important to follow up with your doctor if you have an abnormal Pap test. For example, if you have HPV, you might need to get a Pap test more often.

3. Skin Check-Ups

Moms should also schedule regular skin check-ups. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and it can be deadly if it’s not caught early. Be sure to see a dermatologist at least once a year for a full-body skin check.

You should also perform a self-examination of your skin every month. Look for any new moles or changes in existing moles, such as changes in color, size, or shape. If you find anything suspicious, be sure to see a dermatologist right away.

For example, melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, is often found as a new mole or a change in an existing mole.

4. Cholesterol Check-Ups

High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other health problems. That’s why moms need to get their cholesterol checked regularly. The American Heart Association recommends that adults over 20 have their cholesterol checked every four to six years.

If you have a family history of heart disease or other risk factors for heart disease, you might need to be checked more often. Be sure to talk to your doctor about how often you should have your cholesterol checked. Additionally, you can help keep your cholesterol in check by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

What to Look For after Giving Birth

After giving birth, moms need to be aware of any changes in their bodies. It’s estimated that one in nine women experience postpartum depression after giving birth. Symptoms can include feelings of sadness, anxiety, and hopelessness.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor or mental health professional as soon as possible. With treatment, most women with postpartum depression make a full recovery.

Additionally, diastasis recti is a condition that can occur when the abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy. It can cause your stomach to protrude and can lead to back pain and other problems. So be aware of these things if you’ve given birth recently.

Furthermore, according to this dentist who does dental bridges in Harrisburg, pregnant women are also more prone to dental issues due to the changes in their bodies. Therefore, it’s essential that you visit your dentist during and after pregnancy. Any major procedure will have to be postponed while pregnant but routine checkups and cleaning are still necessary.

These are just a few of the important health check-ups every mom needs to do each year. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, so be sure to talk to your doctor about other health screenings you might need based on your age, family history, and lifestyle. And don’t forget to schedule some time for yourself! Even the busiest moms need to take care of their health.
