Arrange Your Book Collection & Make a Perfect Little Library

As a reader, you are constantly looking for new stories to dive into and new worlds to explore. And as a book collector, you want to make sure that your books are well-organized and easy to access so you can find the right story at the right time. However you choose to organize them, make sure that the system is one that works for you.

There are benefits to arranging your book collection:

  • It makes it easier for you to find the book you’re looking for
  • It makes it easier for others who might want to borrow a book from you
  • It can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room in which they’re displayed

The only challenge with organizing your collection this way is that it can be time-consuming and difficult to keep track of where each book goes. But with a little bit of effort, you can create the perfect little library that will be both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

1) Gather your books in one place.

To start, you will need to gather all of your books together in one place. Once you have them all in one spot, begin sorting them into categories. You can do this by genre, author, or series. Or, if you prefer, you can simply arrange them by color.

For example, you might have a section for all of your mystery novels, another section for your non-fiction books, and a third section for your children’s books. Or, you might choose to arrange your books by the author’s last name. If you have a lot of books, it might be helpful to create subcategories within each larger category. I like to arrange my books by author within genre.

Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong way to do this. The important thing is that you create a system that works for you and that you can easily maintain.

2) Find a suitable location.

Once you have your books sorted, it’s time to find a place to put them. If you have a lot of books, you might opt for a bookshelf or two. But if you have a smaller collection, you might prefer to display your books on a coffee table or in a cabinet.

Wherever you choose to put your books, make sure that the location is both accessible and attractive. You want to be able to easily grab the book you’re looking for, but you also want your little library to look inviting. Plus, if you’re going to be displaying your books in a public space, like a living room or den, you want to make sure that the area is tidy and well-organized.

We have several bookshelves throughout the house and I use this to organize our books as well. For example, kids’ picture books are in one bookshelf (currently in the hallway), homeschooling books are in the dining room (where we do school), and my collection of writing and history books are on my desk in my room.

3) Put your books in order.

Once you have found the perfect spot for your books, it’s time to put them in order. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do this. You can arrange them by category, by color, or by author.

If you want to be able to easily grab the book you’re looking for, you might want to arrange them by category. That way, you can just go to the section you’re interested in and browse through the titles until you find the one you’re looking for.

If you’re more concerned with aesthetics, then arranging your books by color might be the way to go. This option can be particularly striking if you have a lot of books in different colors. It can also be a good way to organize kids’ picture books so that they look prettier on the shelf and less messy.

And if you’re looking for a more personal touch, then arranging your books by author might be the best option. This way, you can easily find all of the books by your favorite authors in one place.

4) Accessorize your little library.

Once you have your books arranged the way you want, it’s time to add a few finishing touches. If you’re displaying your books on shelves, consider adding some decorative items, like bookends or figurines.

If you’re displaying your books on a coffee table or cabinet, you might want to add a pretty tray or a vase of flowers. These little touches can really make your little library stand out and add a touch of personality to the space.
