Water is a necessity for a healthy and functioning body and mind. Just like water is very important for adults, it is beneficial to your kids to stay hydrated. In fact, kids need even more water than adults do, especially when they’re active. Teaching your kids why it’s important to drink enough water is a great way to help them stay healthy and hydrated! Here are some tips on how to teach your kids about the importance of drinking water.
Lead By Example

We keep a pitcher of water in the fridge so there’s always cold water readily available. If your kids don’t like the taste of your well water, then a water filter pitcher ensure they can handle well water.
You can even turn it into a game by seeing who can drink the most water in a day. Whatever you do, make sure your kids are having fun while they’re learning about the importance of water. For example, you can associate water with something they love, such as their favorite sports team or character. How much water might a hockey player need to drink during a game? Can your child match that?

For example, plastic water bottles can leach chemicals into the water, so you may want to opt for a glass or stainless steel water bottle instead.

If they’re old enough, have them track their water intake for a week or month to see how much they’re really drinking. And, of course, always be available to answer any questions they may have about water and its importance! For instance, you can ask them why they think it’s important to drink water or what they think will happen if they don’t drink enough water. An option-based question like this will help them form their own thoughts and conclusions about the importance of water and why they need to drink it.

Symptoms of dehydration include headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, dry mouth and lips, dark urine, constipation, and irritability.
