I grew up baking with my mom. I can remember making little buns out of the dough she was fashioning into bread or shaping my own mini tarts with leftover pastry. By the time I was in my early teens, I was the “Chief Cookie Baker” for our house, responsible for keeping the cookie jar full (an important job, with two hungry teenage brothers in the house). I don’t remember any huge baking flops, but I remember many times that I’d holler, “Mom! What do I do here?”
Even though I’ve been baking in my own kitchen for a long time, there are still moments when I want to holler, “Mom!” I often pick up the phone to call my mom (or my mother-in-law) to say, “Can I substitute this for that? What if I don’t have this sort of pan? What does the recipe mean by this?” But sometimes, they aren’t around when I call. Then I’m left to guess…
