Best Books of 2013

It was difficult to pick my top books from among those I reviewed in 2013.  I read a lot of good books by some of my favourite authors, but which of those good books was the best?  I feel like I’d make a different fiction list on another day, but here’s the best books of 2013 list I made today:

Fiction

Love Finds You in Glacier Bay, Alaska by Ocieanna Fleiss and Tricia Goyer – both contemporary and historical fiction, this book takes readers to the stunning Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska.  I thoroughly enjoyed the love stories and the setting.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (audiobook) – Focus on the Family Radio Theatre brings Victor Hugo’s classic story to life on CD.  I cried at the end of the story—enough said.

The Orphan King by Sigmund Brouwer – this YA novel is a re-release of Brouwer’s Winds of Light series, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it again.  Go back to medieval England, to a time when people believe in magic and a young boy named Thomas struggles to regain his kingdom.

Nonfiction

God is Able by Priscilla Shirer – Priscilla unpacks Ephesians 3:20-21 in this slender book, showing us that God is able to do more than we can ever imagine in our lives.  She shares stories from her own life, digs into the meanings of the words, and shows us that even when God seems to be saying no (or not listening), He’s still able.

The Fantasy Fallacy by Shannon Ethridge – a Christian response to the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon, this book tackles the topic of sexual fantasies and gives honest, practical answers.  Shannon has a master’s degree in counseling and brings her wealth of experience, as well as a lot of research, to this book.

Children’s Fiction

if you want to see a whale  – a beautiful story about a little boy looking for a whale.

What was the best book(s) you read in 2013?
