When I was growing up, my mom was always sewing. I inherited my love of fabrics and DIY sewing projects from her. Now, I have my own box of patterns and fabric and various ideas for creating new things for myself, my girls, or my home. I enjoy pulling out my sewing machine to turn something old into something new. It’s also fun to make matching things for the girls, or to create something at home that I can’t find in a store.
Here are a few cool ideas for easy DIY sewing projects I’d like to try to make! Some of these are easy enough that Sunshine could help make them. She’s been asking to learn to sew lately, which is inspiring me to get back at some projects. Maybe these ideas will inspire you as well!
Embroidery Ideas
If you’re interested in learning to sew or improving your sewing skills, consider taking embroidery classes. These classes are a great way to explore the art of embroidery and learn various stitching techniques from experienced instructors. You’ll have the opportunity to create beautiful embroidered designs and gain confidence in your sewing abilities. Whether you’re interested in hand embroidery or using an embroidery machine, there are classes available for every skill level.
Embroidery is also a fun way to “upcycle” other items, such as jeans or bags, with some new designs. You can personalize numerous articles of clothing or accessories with your favourite logos, images and designs.
DIY Tea Cozy
Elizabeth uses lots of pictures and clear instructions to show how to make an adorable tea cozy (I’ve been wanting one of these! I’ll have to try this pattern!) This could also be a great gift idea for the tea lover in your life.
Window Coverings
Alicia shows how to make simple yet pretty Roman blinds to add style to any window. Window coverings are relatively easy as windows are square and easy to measure. Curtains and blinds add style and fun to any room.
DIY Games
This adorable button-and-fabric version of the classic tic tac toe game is easy enough that kids can make it to give to their friends!
Infinity Scarf
Crystal shares how to make a kids’ infinity scarf (which her daughter looks pretty pleased about!) in this easy-to-follow tutorial with tons of pictures.
Feminine Pads
Save money (and the environment) by sewing a set of feminine pads for yourself. I bought a set which I like, but I could easily add to my collection with this simple pattern.
Shorts
Heather gives easy instructions for converting an old pair of jeans into shorts. I do this regularly when myself or my kids have pants that get holes in the knees. I find it easier to simply turn those holey pants into shorts rather than patching the knees. (If you’re good at embroidering, that could be another fun way to get longer wear out of holey jeans, depending on where the hole is.)
DIY Bags
If your pants are holey in the wrong places to turn into shorts, try making this shoulder bag! My teens have upcycled old pants into other bags as well, with a little bit of creativity.

How timely for me to read this post! I just bought myself a sewing machine this past weekend. I am all about finding easy sewing projects. This looks like a great list to get me started.

These are some really great ideas, but one that catches my eye are the Roman blinds. I have thought about trying these before so maybe this will be the year, LOL! Thanks for the inspiration !

What great sewing projects! No, unfortunately I’ve never learned to sew, except for mending. Funny, because I’m a descendant of tailors. For all that it’s worth, I’d love to be able to sew Halloween costumes for the kids!
Oh, Jenna, if you can mend then you can sew! Find a simple pattern or tutorial online. I think Fabricland also offers sewing classes too – check your local store. I learned from my mom, so I kinda lucked out… it’s a handy skill to have!
One of my goals last year was to learn how to sew, that failed. So maybe this year!
I have a sewing machine and everything I just need to do it.
Oh I definitely need to check out how to DIY roman blinds – both my house and my parents (that just got new windows) are in serious need of blinds, and this is so much better by being able to specifically choose the blind cloth design instead of being stuck with store choices (which are horrid and much the reason why we don’t have blinds yet.) We spent hours in the store trying to find something… yeah, there’s definitely more selection at fabric stores when you can pick your own fabric instead of what the store picked! And then you could make matching throw pillows or accents too if you wanted. 🙂
