We are huge book lovers around here. However, most of the contemporary books we read about school-aged kids are about children in school. As a homeschool graduate and mom, I get excited whenever I find a book that portrays a homeschool student. There’s something to being able to identify with and share experiences with a book character that makes reading a bit more magical. Here’s a list of our favourite books with homeschool characters

This is My Home, This is My School
This is My Home, This is My School by Jonathan Bean is a beautiful picture book in which a boy shares how his home is also his school. Bean captures the fun and chaos of home learning, with vibrant pictures on each page telling so much more of the story than the brief sentences do. This is definitely a must-read for every homeschool family.
Mighty Jack
Mighty Jack by Ben Hatke is a graphic novel about an ordinary boy with a special needs sister, single mom working two jobs, and a neighbour girl who homeschools. As Jack deals with a new summer routine and magical plants growing in his garden, he gets to know Lilly, who has skills like sword-fighting she’s learned from her older brothers. Lilly’s problem-solving, quick-thinking, and swords come in handy in the adventures that follow. Mighty Jack is the first book in a trilogy by Hatke, one of our favourite authors.
Because of the Rabbit
We found Because of the Rabbit by Cynthia Lord on our library app and listened to it as an audiobook while driving to and from school this September. Emma has been homeschooled, along with her older brother, and is now starting public school for the first time. When she and her dad (a game warden) rescue a lost rabbit, Emma tries to help find the rabbit’s owners but also find the rabbit comforts her through the ups and downs of a new school and making new friends. Emma shares what she loved about homeschooling and why she wants to try a new school.
Mama, Why Am I Homeschooled?
If your children have ever asked why you are homeschooling, then this is the book for them. Mama, Why Am I Homeschooled? by Jacy Ruwe is a delightful rhyming book that portrays numerous reasons to homeschool in positive, gentle ways. Written in question-and-answer format, each page gives another reason to homeschool, mentioning homeschool co-op, coding, baking, reading, science, family time and more, and emphasizing how learning happens everywhere.
Homeschool Rocks My Socks
Homeschool Rocks My Socks by Cyrena Shows celebrates the unique way that kids learn at home. Like My Home, My School, this book shows that learning happens everywhere—baking is a math lesson and writing to penpals is language arts. At the end of the book is a words to learn section and discussion questions.
