Migration Movie: quacking good fun for the whole family!

Drop by our place on an evening when I’m not being a taxi mom to one of my five kids, and you’ll likely find us hanging up the projector screen and looking for chips so we can watch a movie together. When everyone has their favourite movie snack and we’ve argued over agreed on a movie to watch, we’ll cuddle up together under some fuzzy blankets on my sectional and laugh, cry and talk our way through the movie.

While we have a few family favourites we’ve watched over and over again, we also love seeing a new movie as soon as it hits DVD or our favourite streaming platform. We caught the trailer for Migration in theatres a while ago and we’re super excited to see this family of ducks fly across our screen sometime soon. If you’ve also been looking for a new movie to watch, enter to win a copy for yourselves!!!

Migration plot synopsis

The Mallard family is in a bit of rut. While dad Mack is content to keep his family safe paddling around their New England pond forever, mom Pam is eager to shake things up and show their kids—teen son Dax and duckling daughter Gwen—the whole wide world. After a migrating duck family alights on their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip, via New York City, to tropical Jamaica.

As the Mallards make their way South for the winter, their well-laid plans quickly go awry. The experience inspires them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends and accomplish more than they ever thought possible, while teaching them more about each other—and themselves—than they ever imagined.

Talk about Migration!

Maybe it’s because I did an English major in university, but we love discussing the books and movies we read and watch. I do try to encourage the kids to keep the talking during the show to a minimum, but once the movie is over… dance party and discussion is on!

CommonSense Media provides a few talking points to get you started:

  • Talk about the danger and peril in Migration. Did you ever feel scared or worried for the Mallards’ safety?
  • The Mallards see their migration as a vacation. Have you ever been on a family trip? How did it compare to the ducks’?
  • Why do birds fly south for the winter? What are some real-life threats they might face on the way?
  • How does Dax demonstrate bravery? Why is courage an important character trait?

More about the Movie

We’re huge fans of past Illumination movies like Sing 2 and Trolls Band TogetherWith Migration, Illumination delivers another family-friendly story that kids and parents of all ages will enjoy together. My kids are going to be trying to places the voices of Danny DeVito (Uncle Dan) and Awkwafina (Chump), while Kumail Nanjiani voices Mack and Elizabeth Banks voices Pam.
