My First Handy Bible: Timeless Bible Stories for Toddlers

When I passed the big white envelope to Lily at the mailbox, she asked, “What’s this?  My swimsuit?”  (I had forgotten their swimsuits at a friends’ place in Alberta, and my friend had to mail them back to us, which was very exciting for Lily.)  I laughed and said, “No, it’s a book for you.”  I’d already squeezed the package and checked the return address, and I knew which book it was: My First Handy Bible.

My First Handy Bible

Inside, we sat down and read it together cover to cover.  It has thirty stories (nineteen Old Testament and eleven New Testament) on sturdy (but not too thick) board pages.  There’s a cute carrying handle and a little latch to keep the Bible closed.  The illustrations by Gustavo Mazali are adorable.  The stories include specific Bible references to the story, if you want to look up more information for your children.

The girls’ favourite story right now is Jonah.  At bedtime, they flip through the pages until they find that story.  Once or twice a day, one of them will start telling the story and then ask me, “What’s that city?”  When I say, “Nineveh,” Sunshine tells me I have a good memory.  The picture in My First Handy Bible shows Jonah swimming away from a very large ship, with Nineveh on the horizon ahead of him.

The girls have several little Bibles and I think this is one of my favourites.  I like the mix of Old and New Testament stories and I was surprised by how many stories are in the Bible.  My First Handy Bible starts, of course, with Genesis 1, but it ends in Revelation, with a brief story about John dreaming about Jesus in heaven.  I haven’t seen any other toddlers’ Bibles tackle Revelation.

Sunshine enjoys flipping through the Bible and telling (or listening to) the stories, but she’s almost ready for a more in-depth Bible, such as The Gospel Story Bible.  My First Handy Bible: Timeless Bible Stories for Toddlers is perfect for Lily, as the stories are short enough to hold her attention with lots of colourful pictures for her to look at while I’m reading to her.  This is an excellent first Bible for any toddler.
