As a housewife, one of my biggest struggles has been getting into a regular cleaning routine. My mom always cleaned house on Tuesdays—scrubbing bathrooms, vacuuming the house top to bottom, mopping the kitchen floor. Now that I have my own house, I’ve found it harder to actually maintain such a routine. Finding some great hardwood cleaning products has helped me get cleaning recently.
Our last two homes have had hardwood floors. I find hardwood shows the dirt more than carpet but makes it easier to sweep up. (Which makes me wonder just how much dirt was hiding in our carpets…). I’ve been trying to develop some little routines to make sure cleaning happens on a regular basis. Doing a quick sweep every night keeps the dirt under control and only takes a few minutes.
Hardwood floors really reward a bit of cleaning. I love getting out my Bona mop after sweeping and making the floors shine. With the mop, I know for sure I’ve picked up every bit of dust and sand that’s crept into the house. (Hello summer and kids playing outside again and tracking all that dirt back into the house!)
Bona recently sent me their Cabinet Cleaner, which I’ve been using to do some spring cleaning around our house. Most of the doors in this house are wood, so it feels good to clean off any fingerprints or dirt from previous tenants and see the wood looking fresh again. If you have wooden kitchen cupboards, these hardwood cleaning products would be great for weekly cleaning of spills and fingerprints (seriously, how do the kids touch EVERYTHING so much?).
I’m not sure that my house always looks immaculate but having friends over is a good excuse to stop procrastinating about the cleaning. I find it easy to keep up on the small, daily cleaning tasks like sweeping and mopping, and harder to find time to do the tasks that need to be tackled less frequently, like washing walls or windows (even though I stare out my finger-printed front window every evening when the sun hits it and tell myself to CLEAN it already).
On Saturday, I helped the girls clean up their rooms. It seems that about once a month, I have to go in and help them organize and get everything back into the right spot (and sometimes pull out toys that they are no longer playing with). Once we’ve gotten all the toys/clothes off the floor and the hair stuff off the dresser, I give them a rag with some furniture polish on it and they like to polish their beds and dressers.
Do you have a regular cleaning routine? What helps you tackle the big chores around your house?
