How Old Is Your Heart?

Do you know your heart age?  Not your age (although I do have to think about that some days) but your heart’s age.  Your habits can affect how old your heart is—and it might just be older than you are!  During February, which is Heart month, Shopper’s Drug Mart is helping Canadians calculate their heart age.

February is heart month

I admit I was curious.  I tend to think I’m healthy.  I mean, I’m a little bit overweight (thanks to three kids!) and I do like chocolate and I don’t exercise much (other than walking to and from class or carrying the baby or running up and down the stairs to get everything needed to get us out the door), but I don’t have terrible habits.  Okay, maybe I’m not as healthy as I think I am.  (When school is done, I’ll work on that!)

So I clicked over to the website.  The first thing I noticed was that you have to be 30 to take the test.  I’m 30 in a couple of months (which I realized after a moment of thought) so I felt okay about fudging the number.  I did wonder why the test was designed only for people over 30.  I mean, wouldn’t it be a good thing to start thinking about heart health before then?  To develop better habits before your heart gets older than you?

After that came a few easy questions and then they got harder.  Even when I was seeing my midwife once a month, I couldn’t have told you what my blood pressure is, much less some of the other numbers on the test.  So I put “average.”  Like I said, I tend to think I’m averagely healthy.  After clicking a few more buttons and getting the chance to double-check the data I’d entered, I found out my heart age.

Ready?  29.

Awesome.  My heart is the same age as me.  :)

When it comes to health, knowledge is power.  I know that lifestyle and genetics can affect my heart.  And now that I have kids, I find I’m even more aware of some of my choices because my choices affect my children.  (I’m grateful to my mom for the example she’s always provided of eating healthy and staying active.  I have never been able to keep up to her at any form of exercise!)

The Heart Age Calculator not only calculates your heart’s age for you, but also provides additional information for you.  Knowing and understanding your heart age can help you do something about it if necessary.  This is the only scientifically validated online too which offers a personalized heart age and cardiovascular risk profile recommended by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Guidelines.

I sent it to my mom to try out, because I knew she’d have the numbers on hand that the test requested.  She said, “Okay, that was fun. I have a 5.2% chance of dying from heart disease :). You do need to know a lot of numbers—I had to pull out my file from my last check up in the summer, good thing I had it.”  Remember I said she’s uber-healthy?  Well, her heart is about four years younger than she is.

So what’s your heart age?  Go take the test and get your friends and family to do it too!

Very cool! I started to do it but thought I wouldn’t get much of an accurate reading since I have no clue what my cholesterol is at. Did you know all of those things, blood pressure and what not?

I also have a mom that’s healthy and it really did impact me and my lifestyle choices in such a positive way. Because of that, my heart is young and I plan to keep it that way :) What a great tool!

Kids really are a great motivation to remember your own health and in turn you affect their choices later in life regarding health. I’m glad your mom was such a good role model!

I liked how quick it was to take this test, though there were things I had no clue about. I don’t know my cholesterol and I just did the average too. But it says my heart is younger than me so I’m happy about that!
